Pawnbrokers play a pivotal role in collecting scrap gold in the form of old and broken jewelry from the public. While much of the pawns are typically retrieved, those items that are sold to pawnbrokers or are eventually forfeited make their way back into the hands of consumers, after being refined, as a new piece of jewelry.
